More silverware added to Australia’s trophy cabinet

Australia’s 4-day straight gold medal haul is over but marathon swimmer Moesha Johnson and the men’s K4 add some much needed silver to the medal tally

AUSTRALIAN MEDALLISTS 

SILVER

  • Moesha Johnson (women’s marathon swim) – Johnson is now Australia’s most successful Olympic marathon swimmer after winning silver just behind the Netherlands’ Sharon van Rouwendaal in a dramatic finish.

  • Riley Fitzsimmons, Jackson Collins, Pierre van der Westhuyzen and Noah Havard (men’s K4 500m kayak sprint) – The boys have clinched an Olympic silver medal edged out by sprint kayak powerhouse Germany.

BRONZE 

  • Charlie Senior (men’s 57kg boxing) – At just the age of 22-years-old the young British-born boxer has won an Olympic bronze in his debut Games after going down to Uzbekistan’s Abdumalik Khalokov in the semi-final.
  • Caitlin Parker – (women’s 75kg boxing) – Australia’s boxing team captain failed to knock down China’s Li Qian in the semi final but will be happy to come away with a bronze alongside fellow bronze medallist Charlie Senior.

OTHER HEADLINE GOLD MEDALLISTS 

  • American Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone has smashed her own 400m hurdles world record and destroyed Dutch rival Femke Bol to win Olympic gold a classy style.
  • Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem has made history for his country becoming the first ever Pakistani Olympic track and field champion and grabbing Pakistan’s first medal in 32 years by taking out top spot in the men’s javelin.

WHAT ELSE HAPPENED 

  • Australia’s best chance at another athletics Olympic gold medal is through to the women’s 1500m final as Jessica Hull declares that she has a legitimate chance of pinching the top spot on the podium.

  • The Aussie Stingers have pulled off a major upset, beating three-time defending champions the United States in a dramatic penalty shootout 14-13 to make their way into the gold medal match.

  • Aussie beach volleyball duo Taliqua Clancy and Mariafe Artacho del Solar are out of the Olympic gold medal contention after going down 2-1 against Brazil but will have a chance to nab a medal in the bronze medal match.

  • Australia’s golden girl Jessica Fox will represent athletes on the International Olympic Committee for the next eight years after being voted in by her peers.

  • The Kookaburra’s Tom Craig continues to deal with the fallout following his cocaine arrest with the Olympian set to meet with his professional club Germany’s Hamburg Polo Club to determine his punishment.

WHO SAID WHAT? 

“I physically cannot believe it. I cried for maybe 20 minutes straight then. I’ve never beaten the USA in an important tournament – world champs, World Cup – nothing,” Abby Andrews on the Stingers historic win in the women’s water polo semi-final.

“A lot of confidence. I felt really good tonight, but tonight isn’t the final so I’ve got to go back, recover and come back on Saturday,” Australia’s Jessica Hull after qualifying in seventh position for the final.

“It means a lot. The past three years there has been a lot of work put into it with the boys. There have been a couple of ups and downs but we found our consistencies,” Men’s K4 silver medallist Pierre van der Westhuyzen.
