Australian Dance Party’s Sphere celebrates a decade of dance

Australian Dance Party is gearing up to celebrate its 10-year coming of age with its new work, Sphere.

An immersive piece danced to original music by award-winning muso Sia Ahmad and huge videoscapes by videographer Liam Budge, of Creswick Collective, the title reference, ADP director Alison Plevey says, is both to the universe and to the sphere of influence of dance.

At a media call on Tuesday, the real-life dancers, Plevey, Sara Black, Ashlee Bye, Gabriel Sinclair, Pat Hayes Cavanagh, Jahna Lugnan, Jason Pearce and Mia Rashid, interacted with huge versions of themselves on screen in an almost voyeuristic way. The audience of around 100 will be able to view the action over 360 degrees in a gallery-style experience where viewers can move freely through the work.

In the opening piece, Underpass,  a nod to the urban side of the ACT,  a single live dancer performed before dazzling graffiti images found by the company in Kambah, with another dancer appearing on screen.

After that, moving into nature, live dancers confront a series of bushscapes incorporating both dancers and gumtrees filmed by Budge at O’Connor Ridge. And that’s only the first half.

Performances of Sphere will take place on Thursday and Friday, then on Saturday the celebrations will wind up with a performance followed by a mighty dance party at The Vault.

That final performance is packed out, but after the show there will be plenty of room for everybody at the party, Plevey says.

Sphere, May 14-16, The Vault, Fyshwick.
