Independent ACT Senator David Pocock has sought to strengthen the Federal Government’s proposed gambling advertising laws with six amendments, including a complete ban on gambling advertising and inducements.
Senator Pocock said the legislation did not go far enough to protect Australians, particularly children, from gambling advertising, and warned it could allow more gambling ads during live sport broadcasts.
His amendments would remove the proposed 8.30pm exemption for live sport broadcasts, extend advertising blackout periods to cover the hour before and after sporting events, ban gambling inducements and require online gambling advertising opt-outs to be simple and easy to use.
The amendments would also ensure smart TVs are covered by the new laws, require an independent review of the reforms after three years and introduce a comprehensive ban on gambling advertising across all platforms within three years, in line with recommendations of the Murphy Review.
The Federal Government’s bill has been referred to a Senate committee for inquiry.
