Intimate evening with Vince Jones and band

In her latest Arts in the City column, HELEN MUSA reports that Vince Jones is in town for an intimate evening of jazz.

Hot on the heels of a performance Herbie Hancock at The Canberra Theatre, legendary Australian jazz performaer Vince Jones will appear in a Smith’s@Belco gig, a terrific coup for this burgeoning musical initiative. Audiences can expect an intimate evening of music with Jones and his band. Belconnen Arts Centre, October 19.

Poets Paul Munden and Shane Strange will be in conversation at Manning Clark House, 11 Tasmania Circle, Forrest, October 17.

Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council’s extraordinary Arts Trail turns to Queanbeyan on October 19 and 20, with 23 separate venues on the list. 

Beaver Galleries – David Frazer, Walking for Solace (composition I)

Galleries

  • New exhibitions at Beaver Galleries are David Frazer’s new series of relief prints stem from a collaboration with singer-songwriter Tom Waits and Cathy Franzi’s This place, this time,  porcelain works based on plants seen during a field trip. Opening October 17.
  • The Artists’ Society of Canberra annual Spring Exhibition will be opened by the National Library’s Nicola Mackay-Sim at the Fitters’ Workshop, Kingston, on October 19, then will run until October 27.

Stage

  • Only Everything is a new musical “dramedy” inspired by the real-life experiences of creators, Shell Abdoo and Berin Denham. Courtyard Studio, October 17-26.
  • The Department of Responsible Adulting is a new work created by Canberra Youth Theatre. In a real office space in Belconnen, audiences experience a new public service run entirely by children. October 18-27.
  • QL2 Dance’s Emerging Choreographers Project, Elemental, features 43 young dance artists aged 8-17 in five short works. Canberra College Performing Arts Centre, October 18.
  • Pinkalicious The Musical, based on the book by Victoria Kann and Elizabeth Kann, will be performed by Perform Australia’s Academy students. Tuggeranong Arts Centre, October 18-19.
  • Two Strong Hearts is a musical show celebrating the careers of John Farnham and Olivia Newton-John, performed by Anita Spring and Jeff Fallon. The B, Queanbeyan, October 18.

Concerts

  • Billed as a special event, the Canberra Symphony Orchestra will play Vivaldi and Piazzolla in Four Seasons, Llewellyn Hall, October 18 and 19.
  • ANU Chamber Music Students will perform a lunchtime concert at the at Larry Sitsky Recital Room, October 17.
  • Australian singer, songwriter, guitarist and recording artist Daniel Champagne will be in concert at The Street Theatre, October 18.
  • It’s Six O’clock Baroque at the Wesley Music Centre on October 20.
  • Jane Sheldon is Performing Songs of Eve for Artsong Canberra, Wesley Music Centre Wesley Music Centre, October 20.
  • Italian Pianist Andrea Molteni appears in the Wesley Lunchtime Concert Series playing works by Bach, Dallapiccola, Beethoven, and Liszt. October 23.
