The demolition of an ageing public housing complex in Yarralumla will begin soon, clearing the way for 30 new homes.
According to the ACT Government, the new development will replace the former Minimbah Court complex, built in the 1950s and no longer considered suitable for residents. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2027.
The project is set to deliver a mix of one, two and three-bedroom homes across three two-storey buildings on a 3000 square metre site, including 18 one-bedroom units, 10 two-bedroom terraces and two three-bedroom dwellings.
The government says the homes will feature communal open space and be located close to shops, public transport, green spaces and a school.
It says existing verge trees will be retained, along with many mature trees on the site, to preserve the area’s streetscape.
Parking will include 37 resident spaces and eight visitor spots, including one accessible space. Each unit will have at least one car space, and electric vehicle charging infrastructure will be installed. One building will also include basement parking and bicycle storage.
The government says Monarch Building Solutions has been awarded the contract for both demolition and construction.
The project forms part of 85 homes being delivered in the ACT with support from Housing Australia’s Future Fund Facility Round 2, and contributes to the government’s target of 30,000 new homes by 2030, including 5000 public, community and affordable rental dwellings.
The ACT Government says recent changes to planning laws mean most public housing developments are now classified as Territory Priority Projects, exempting them from third-party appeals that can delay construction by up to a year.
