The Canberra Liberals are calling on the government to clear a backlog of 460 streetlight faults that have remained unresolved for more than three months, including one dating back to October 2022.

Shadow government services minister Peter Cain said figures provided in response to questions taken on notice during budget estimates showed 460 faults had been outstanding for more than 90 days.

Mr Cain said residents had contacted his office about prolonged streetlight outages and concerns about walking through darkened streets at night.

“Streetlights are basic infrastructure. People should not have to repeatedly report a broken light and then wait months wondering if anyone is going to fix it,” he said.

The figures follow correspondence between Mr Cain and Government Services Minister Tara Cheyne about streetlight outages.

According to Mr Cain, Ms Cheyne acknowledged residents had raised “significant safety concerns” about prolonged outages and said contractor shortages were affecting repair times.

Mr Cain called on the government to clear the outstanding faults, saying Canberrans paying rates should expect basic infrastructure to be maintained.
