Italian jockey Stefano Cherchi has died following an accident at a Canberra race meeting on March 20.
Mr Cherchi was dislodged from his mount along with two other riders. The other two did not sustain serious injury.
The three horses involved were also cleared of any serious injury.
Canberra Racing Club chief executive Darren Pearce says Mr Cherchi was a highly respected young man with “immense talent”.
“Racing is a sport of soaring highs and sadly at times, devastating lows,” Mr Pearce says.
“We are feeling the pain of Stefano’s loss to our very core and are grateful that our industry rallies in dark times to support those who need it, and we are now focused on those support efforts.”
Mr Cherchi had relocated to Australia four months ago, riding in 25 races in Australia including two winners.
A memorial mass will be held on April 8 at All Saints Catholic Church, Liverpool, NSW at 10.30am.
