MARCH 7 – Kristy Giteau named Monaro Woman of the Year

Kristy is the founder of charity, Win The Day, and seeks to financially and emotionally support families with a member suffering from childhood cancer. She created the charity in the midst of her daughter, Ka’ili’s cancer battle. Ka’ili is now cancer free.

APRIL 24 – Canberra woman wins lottery millions

Number one on the “CityNews” most-read list for April is a story on a Canberran woman who won $2.7 million in the Saturday Lotto draw.

MAY 11 – ‘Incident’ halts light rail in Civic

Buses had to take over from the light rail for about an hour in May, after a man was struck by a tram around Cooyong Street and Northbourne Avenue.

JUNE 8 – Hackers breach ACT government email gateway

Topping the list for June is a story on the hacking of an email gateway system, Barracuda, that supports some ACT government ICT systems, but the government was unsure what’s been breached.

JULY 17 – Indigenous leader stabbed to death in Townsville

A prominent indigenous leader – 39-year-old Bruce Martin – well known and educated in Canberra, has been identified as the victim of a fatal stabbing in Townsville. Bruce was a former member of the Prime Minister’s Indigenous Advisory Council, educated at Canberra Grammar School and spent his holidays learning language up north.

AUGUST 11 – Industrial action stops NSW police helping the ACT

Number one on the “CityNews” most-read list for August is a story on NSW Police withdrawing assistance from ACT Policing, escalating industrial action against the federal government over a failure to fix a long-standing tax issue that prevented officers from saving superannuation for their retirement.

OCTOBER 28 – Theodore man faces 15 sexual offences
