Suspended driver collides with a building

A 25-year-old Waramanga man with a suspended licence failed to stop for police before colliding with a residential building in Gungahlin on Tuesday afternoon.

Police say they spotted an unregistered and uninsured black Mazda driving at excessive speeds along Mirrabei Drive, Ngunnawal at around 3.30pm.

The vehicle failed to stop for them and took off  reaching speeds significantly higher than the posted limit.

Using stop sticks, police successfully deflated one of the Mazda’s front tyres, however, the man continued to drive erratically, almost colliding with a bus and driving along grass median strips, on the wrong side of the road, and on to footpaths.

Police say the driver finally lost control of the car that then hit a residential building in Gungahlin at low speed before fleeing the scene. The man was apprehended a short distance later following a chase on foot.

The man faces charges of failing to stop a motor vehicle for police, dangerous driving, driving an unregistered vehicle, using an uninsured vehicle and driving on a suspended licence.
