THE National Zoo and Aquarium is open after two days of being closed following the murder of a 29-year-old Bhutanese woman in its commerical kitchen on Monday.

In a statement the zoo expressed its condolences  to the families of those affected by Monday’s events and sorrow for its staff, many of whom the zoo says have “been significantly affected.”

“Thank you also to the multitude of friends, visitors, members, staff and the general public for their kind thoughts and messages of support,” the statement says.

“Jamala staff have generally been significantly affected by the events and Jamala will remain shut until December 30 and will reopen subject to staff sentiments and availability.”

Jude Wijesinghe, a co-worker of the deceased, has been charged with one count of murder and refused bail.

He will next appear in court on April 14.
