Inmate charged with family violence threats

A 30-year-old Chifley man faces court after being charged with family violence offences allegedly committed while on remand.

Police say the man was remanded in the Alexander Maconochie Centre on June 5 and subsequently listed as the respondent of a family violence order (FVO).

A condition of this order stated the man was prohibited from “causing someone else to contact the protected person(s).”

Police allege that on June 13, the man called a family member using the AMC’s telephone service and instructed the family member to contact the protected person.

Police further allege that between June 15 and 17, the man made three similar calls, instructing the family member to contact the protected person.

Around this date, the FVO was discharged, and the man was subsequently released from AMC.

However, following a review of AMC phone records, the man was arrested on July 6 in Civic and  charged with contravening a family violence order and breaching a good behaviour order.

Officer in Charge of ACT Policing’s Family Violence and Victims of Crime, A/Insp Troy Gordon, said police would continue to work with partner agencies to ensure family violence victims were protected, this protection extends to actions of the offender while on remand.

“Family violence is a traumatic experience that impacts adults and children in our community. I encourage anyone who has been a victim of family violence to come forward and speak to police,” he said.

Report incidents at any police station or call 131444.
