Emergency services responding to nearly 900 calls

Campsie SES members tackle a fallen tree on a roof in Canberra.

THE ACT emergency services have been responding to almost 900 calls for assistance from Friday night’s thunderstorm deluge.

Local crews, along with support from NSW,  have been able to complete almost 400 call outs and continued to work into Saturday night.

Evoenergy was also working to restore power to the majority of households affected, however about 200 households will remain without power due to the complexity of damage caused by the storm. Evoenergy says it hopes to have all power restored by 5pm on Sunday.

A community support hub at the Melba Copland College (97 Verbrugghen Street) will be open 10am-3pm on Sunday with facilities for food disposal, charging stations and bags of ice for those without power.
