Calvary doctors wary of Canberra Hospital culture

SENIOR doctors at Calvary Public Hospital are demanding that the Bruce facility be kept apart from Canberra Hospital in the event of the threatened takeover by the ACT government.

“While some progress has been made with the ACT government in ensuring that any transition to Canberra Health Services is done sensitively and fairly, the Calvary senior medical staff remain wary of the government’s plans for the hospital,” Prof Walter Abhayaratna, AMA ACT president said.

He said the message from a meeting with senior doctors was that they did not want the Canberra Hospital culture imposed on them.

“The senior doctors want to defend and preserve the workplace culture in Calvary,” said Prof Abhayaratna.

“They’re not against collaboration, but they don’t want structures simply imposed on them.

“The trust deficit is significant, and the ACT government will need to work hard to bridge the gap.”
