Emerson: ACT’s community funding boost was overdue

Homeless… Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the ACT fare poorly in any comparison of any aspect of housing.

Independent MLA Thomas Emerson has welcomed the ACT Government’s decision to spend $58.8 million on community services and frontline support programs in the 2026-27 Budget, describing the funding boost as overdue.

The package includes $23.7 million in additional funding for community sector organisations, alongside $14.8 million for community legal assistance and justice support services.

Mr Emerson said the permanent funding uplift followed sustained advocacy for long-term support for community organisations facing rising demand linked to population growth and cost-of-living pressures.

“This is a welcome announcement that offers a lifeline to many community organisations that haven’t been sufficiently resourced to meet growing demand,” he said.

The Budget includes $2.15 million for Legal Aid ACT to help manage increasing caseloads, as well as funding for a review of the organisation’s operations and funding arrangements.

Homelessness services will receive $15.4 million in expanded and new funding, including support for Samaritan House, Blue Door and RoadHouse.

The package also includes funding for LGBTQIA+ advocacy and support services, programs for children and vulnerable people, and reforms to worker screening and information sharing systems.

Mr Emerson said long-term spending on prevention and early intervention would reduce pressure on hospitals, mental health services and the justice system.
