Libs push for ‘fun scrubs’ on Nurses Day

A push to allow more colourful and expressive scrubs in healthcare settings has been highlighted as part of International Nurses’ Day celebrations in the ACT, with a community petition calling for greater flexibility in uniform policies.

The Canberra Liberals have used the occasion to recognise nurses’ work across hospitals, aged-care facilities and clinics, while also backing the proposal to introduce more varied and vibrant scrubs in healthcare workplaces.

Opposition Leader and Shadow Health Minister Mark Parton said nurses should be acknowledged year-round for their work in often high-pressure environments, and said their safety and wellbeing remained a key concern amid rising reports of workplace occupational violence.

But he also pointed to the potential benefits of more expressive uniforms in clinical settings, saying: “For children in hospital, elderly patients living with dementia, or people facing stressful medical situations, bright and cheerful scrubs can help create a calmer and more comforting environment.”

The petition suggests that allowing themed or colourful scrubs could improve patient experience, particularly for younger patients and those in distress, while also boosting staff morale.

Shadow Minister for Women and Women’s Health Leanne Castley said any changes should balance professionalism with wellbeing, and said the idea was worth considering if it supported both nurses and patients.

The “Fun Scrubs” petition is open for signature at the ACT Legislative Assembly website.
