Man charged with driving at partner’s father

A 38-year-old man has been charged after police allege he drove a utility at his partner’s father and fled from police in Canberra’s north.

Police say the man was released on parole in November, but failed to appear before the Sentence Administration Board in December, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

On the evening of Sunday, April 5, police say they responded to reports of a disturbance in Aranda, where a woman was heard screaming and a black utility was being driven dangerously.

At the scene, the woman’s father told police the man had assaulted his daughter, struck her with the vehicle, and driven at him multiple times. Witnesses also reported seeing the vehicle being driven aggressively towards the man.

Later that evening, police sighted the utility in Macquarie allegedly travelling at speed on the wrong side of the road without headlights. A tyre deflation device was deployed, damaging a front tyre, but the driver continued before abandoning the vehicle and fleeing on foot.

The vehicle was seized and found to be displaying stolen NSW number plates. Police later confirmed the driver was unlicensed and that the vehicle was unregistered and uninsured.

About 1am on Saturday, officers attended an unrelated disturbance in Belconnen involving the same man and arrested him on the outstanding warrant. Police allege he resisted arrest.

He has been charged with acts endangering life, aggravated furious driving, using a number plate with intent to deceive, unlawful possession of stolen property, driving while unlicensed, using an unregistered vehicle, using an uninsured vehicle, and obstructing a territory public official.
