The Canberra Liberals will introduce a dedicated Suicide Prevention Bill, promising a more co-ordinated, long-term approach to what they describe as one of the territory’s most pressing public health issues.

Opposition Leader and Shadow Health Minister Mark Parton announced the commitment, arguing current efforts across government lack alignment and accountability.

“Too many families have felt the devastating impact of suicide. This Bill is about turning words into action,” Mr Parton said.

Under the proposal, the legislation would establish a statutory framework to guide suicide prevention efforts across health, education, justice and community services. It would also aim to improve data collection and public reporting, while prioritising early intervention and support for at-risk groups.

Mr Parton said the model would embed a whole-of-government approach, with clearer roles and responsibility across agencies.

“This cannot be tackled in silos. It requires leadership and co-ordination,” he said.

The Liberals say the Bill would also strengthen partnerships with community organisations and mental health professionals, and ensure people with lived experience help shape policy and service delivery.
