Canberrans using Qantas points to book flights on Emirates are facing higher costs and tighter restrictions, as changes to the long-running airline partnership reshape the value of frequent flyer rewards.
The Qantas-Emirates alliance, launched in 2013 and once described as a “seismic shift” in Australian aviation, saw the two carriers align their networks, lounges and loyalty programs, with Qantas even rerouting its European flights via Dubai instead of Singapore.
More than a decade on, that partnership remains in place – but for frequent flyers, the experience has changed significantly.
Recent updates to the Qantas Frequent Flyer program have made Emirates reward seats more expensive across most cabins. Economy and business-class redemptions have risen by up to 10 per cent, while premium economy has jumped by around 30 per cent and first class by about 20 per cent.
At the same time, new restrictions have been introduced on who can access the most sought-after seats. Only Qantas members with at least Silver status can redeem points for Emirates first class, effectively locking out entry-level frequent flyers.
Industry analysts say the shift reflects broader changes in how airlines manage loyalty programs, with premium cabins increasingly reserved for high-value or high-status customers.
For travellers, the question is no longer just where points can take them — but whether the long-standing Qantas-Emirates alliance still delivers the same benefits it once promised.
