Artists take a curious look at birds

The Canberra (and beyond) art scene is in full spring swing. Here’s the latest of what’s on where from Artsweek columnist HELEN MUSA.

Curious Birds brings together work by four artists known for creating quirky and whimsical bird art pieces and incorporating found objects and materials in their work.

They are steampunk ceramic artist Anna O’Neale, eclectic collector and sculptor Tom Buckland, sculptor and street artist byrd (aka Dan Maginnity) and Sydney-based bricolage and assemblage artist Ian Swift. Tuggeranong Arts Centre, opening October 17.

Stage

  • The 2017 Pulitzer Prize-nominated play The Wolves, by American playwright Sarah DeLappe at Belconnen Arts Centre, October 15-November 1.
  • Everyman Theatre reprises its hit Broadway parody The Musical of Musicals (The Musical!), ACT Hub, Kingston, October 17-25.
  • Greek Theatre Now auditions for The Trojan Women, directed by Cate Clelland, at Tooms Place, Lyons. October 18-19.
  • Fortūna, a solo dance/theatre work by Sugar Kaye Sañejo Grefaldeo, fuses Filipino folk dance, hip-hop, and spoken word to explore luck, wealth, and destiny at Courtyard Studio. October 17-18.
  • Clothing the Loop: Sustainable Fashion Festival, staged by the Australian Dance Party, takes place at The Vault, Fyshwick. October 18.

Concerts

  • Monsieur Camembert brings a 10-piece ensemble to Canberra Theatre, reimagining Leonard Cohen’s songs with new arrangements and guest vocalists. October 17.
  • Snow Concert Hall presents British pianist Benjamin Grosvenor in a Canberra-exclusive program featuring Chopin’s Sonata No. 2, Ravel’s Gaspard de la nuit, and Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. October 16.
  • Wesley Music Centre celebrates the harpsichord in Bach to Bach, a festival concert featuring renowned performers Marko Sever and Thomas Wilson. Wesley Uniting Church, October 17.
  • Live at Lanyon features the Canberra Symphony Orchestra with vocalist Kirrah Amosa performing jazz, soul and popular favourites at Lanyon Homestead, Tharwa, October 18.
  • I Progetti Chamber Choir performs The Spy’s Choirbook at All Saints Church, Ainslie. October 19.
  • Canberra songwriter Ben Drysdale returns to Smith’s Alternative, accompanied by pianist Niall Howe, for a mix of intimate ballads and upbeat folk songs. October 19.
  • The Australian String Quartet, performing Death and the Maiden, Britten’s String Quartet No. 2, and Paul Stanhope’s Elegies and Dances, appears at Gandel Hall, National Gallery, October 19.
  • Tenor Andrew Goodwin joins harpist Alice Giles for a recital of works by Caccini, Britten, Donizetti, Grieg, Handel, Ravel. Wesley Music Centre, October 19.
  • Rhythm Syndicate presents From Broadway to the Big Screen, an afternoon exploring iconic songs from film and stage musicals. Wesley Uniting Church, October 19.
  • Alma Moodie Quartet, with Olivia Hans-Rosenbaum and Joshua Batty, performs Brahms’ Clarinet Quintet and Prokofiev’s Flute Sonata arrangement at Wesley Music Centre, October 21.
  • A Spring Interlude: Woodwind Chamber Music features Francesco Celata, Rebecca Rivera at Wesley Music Centre for a lunchtime concert on October 22.

Galleries

  • Queanbeyan-Palerang Arts Trail transforms Queanbeyan and surrounds with more than 20 galleries, pop-ups and performances, coinciding with the Diwali Mela Lantern Festival at Queanbeyan Showground. October 18-19.
  • In The Gift of Art, U3A Yass presents a community art exhibition at Kyeema Art Gallery, Capital Wines, Hall. From October 17.
  • Circle Jerk, an exhibition by Gavin Bradstreet, featuring works shaped by fashion and fine art. Platform, Manuka, October 17-November 2.
  • Real and Imagined, by Lea Palij and Ingrid Ferguson, showcases poetic Art Nouveau interpretations of Australian flora at The Hive, Queanbeyan. October 17-November 2.
  • Canberra Contemporary, Parkes, presents Masked Memory by Rosalind Lemoh alongside Inheritance by Phuong Ngo, exploring connections to Mende and Themne cultures. From October 18.
  • Artists Ross Andrews and Rodney Moss present the triptych Earthly Delights and other artworks, at ArtBox Gallery, Barton. October 18-19 & 25-26.
  • Jill Clingan’s Unfinished Business, a 65+ year retrospective, is on view at Strathnairn Woolshed Gallery. October 18-November 9.
  • Eclectic Visions, featuring the contemporary group of the Artists Society of Canberra, Yarralumla Gallery and Oaks Brasserie, October 19-November 23.
  • Rmsina Daniel’s The Remaining Echo explores ancient Mesopotamia through sculpture, at ANCA Gallery, Dickson. Until October 26.
