Royal tale of status, power, betrayal and neglect

A small cast of three actors brings a little known, historical story to life.

It’s the cautionary tale of Marion “Crawfie” Crawford, governess to Princesses Lilibet, the future Queen Elizabeth II and her younger sister Princess Margaret.

The plot revolves around the relationship between Elizabeth, the Queen Mother (Sharon Millerchip) and the working-class Scottish nanny, Crawfie (Briallen Clarke).

All other roles are played by Matthew Backer. A masterful fool, he effortlessly switches from journalist to butler, king, cad, and, most adorably, the child Princess Lillibet.

It’s a tragicomedy of status, power, perceived betrayal and neglect.

It’s also a stylish and economically crafted show, perfectly suited to touring.

A spare set makes great use of model trains, houses and castles that perfectly evoke both the early 20th century and the archaic world of the English monarchy.

The pace is quick and clear. There’s barely a spare word or gesture.

The voicework is superb across all actors. Clarke’s transition from Crawfie’s broad, Scottish accent to the posh English required by the royal household is completely credible. Baker’s dexterous bounds between Australian, American, Scottish and English accents are equally impressive.

The Queen’s Nanny is by Australian playwright Melanie Tait and follows the huge success of her Appleton Ladies Potato Race, which is now also a TV film.

Presented by Sydney’s Ensemble Theatre, the Queen’s Nanny premiered in 2024 and is now touring nationally until early July.

If you can still get a ticket, do yourself a favour. It could be the most enjoyable show you’ve seen for ages.
