A 16-year-old boy is facing serious driving charges – including driving at police – after a weekend of running amok in stolen cars across Canberra.

On early Friday afternoon police say they spotted a reportedly stolen white BMW hatchback driving dangerously along Mugga Lane.

Police activated emergency lights and sirens and the BMW stopped before accelerating away at speed, crossing to the wrong side of the road.

A short time later, there were reports of the BMW doing burnouts on the Calwell High School sports oval in close proximity to students.  The driver of the vehicle was also reported to be holding what appeared to be a pistol.

The car was next seen in Theodore, where its driver rammed a police car to evade apprehension. The vehicle stopped shortly after, and following a short foot chase, police arrested two teenage boys.

A third boy, the 16-year-old, was seen running through the grounds of St Francis of Assisi Primary School.

As a precaution, both schools were placed into lockdown.

Over the weekend, police continued looking for the 16-year-old. At 4.30am on Sunday two vehicles were stolen from a Deakin house, one being a silver Volkswagen T-Roc.

On Sunday night, police say the stolen Volkswagen was seen travelling at excessive speeds throughout the Tuggeranong district, before the 16-year-old driver was arrested after surrendering to police in Chisholm.

He has been charged with failing to stop for police, dangerous driving, unlicensed driving, driving a motor vehicle at police, and breaching a good behaviour order.
