Speeding spree comes to a fiery halt

A 37-year-old man from Queanbeyan led ACT police on speeding spree across Canberra on Sunday for which he is now facing a series of serious driving offences.

Police allege that at about 2.20pm a silver Kia Carnival, travelling on the wrong side of the road, headed directly towards a  marked police vehicle at speed, before swerving back to the correct side of the road.

A pursuit began, but was terminated by the police due to the way the man was driving.

The Kia allegedly ran a red light at the intersection of Melrose Drive and Eggleston Crescent in Phillip and was sighted multiple times throughout Waramanga and Weston, travelling at high speeds through backstreets and on green belts in an attempt to evade police.

By 2.35pm, police say, the vehicle had crashed at the Caswell Drive turnoff on to the Glenloch Interchange and was on fire.

ACT Fire & Rescue extinguished the fire, which police say was threatening to spread to nearby bushland.

The driver was found in nearby bushland and arrested.

He has been charged with five offences, including one count of failing to stop a motor vehicle for police, and two counts of reckless driving. Police say further charges may be laid.
