Third person charged over sheep cruelty

A 17-year-old boy has become the third person charged over an alleged animal cruelty incident at a rural Tuggeranong property that left four sheep dead and two others seriously injured.

Police allege several people entered the property near the Monaro Highway on the night of September 16, using dogs to round up eight sheep into a holding pen.

Several sheep were allegedly deliberately injured, with one dying and three others requiring euthanasia because of the severity of their injuries. Two more suffered serious injuries.

The property’s residence was also allegedly broken into and ransacked.

The incident was discovered when the owner arrived on September 17.

An 18-year-old Richardson man was arrested and charged on October 9, followed by a 27-year-old man, already in custody over unrelated matters, on October 22.

A warrant was issued for the 17-year-old on October 22 and he was arrested in Chisholm on Saturday.

He appeared in the ACT Children’s Court on Monday, charged with four counts of jointly committing aggravated animal cruelty causing death, two counts of jointly committing aggravated animal cruelty causing serious injury, and one count each of aggravated burglary, attempted aggravated burglary, participating in a criminal group and driving offences.
