One of the world’s most celebrated chamber ensembles, the Sitkovetsky Trio, will make its Canberra debut at Snow Concert Hall on August 2.

Recent winners of the BBC Music Magazine Chamber Music Award, the ensemble has appeared in many of Europe’s leading concert halls. Their recording of Beethoven’s piano trios was named one of The Times’ Best Classical Albums of 2024.

The concert opens with Beethoven’s Piano Trio in D major, Op.70 No.1, the ‘Ghost Trio’, before turning to the rarely performed Piano Trio No.2 by French composer Cécile Chaminade, whose chamber music has enjoyed renewed interest in recent years.

Violist Stefanie Farrands, to join the trio.

After the interval, the trio will be joined by Australian Chamber Orchestra principal viola, Stefanie Farrands, for Brahms’ Piano Quartet No.1 in G minor.

The trio was formed after violinist Alexander Sitkovetsky and pianist Wu Qian met as teenagers at England’s Yehudi Menuhin School. They were later joined by German cellist Isang Enders, and together have built an international reputation.

Individually, Sitkovetsky made his concerto debut at the age of eight and has become one of Europe’s leading violinists. Wu Qian, originally from China, studied on scholarship at the Yehudi Menuhin School, where her lifelong musical partnership with Sitkovetsky began. Enders was appointed principal cellist of Germany’s Dresden Staatskapelle at just 20 before dedicating himself to chamber music.
