Theatre / 5 Lesbians Eating a Quiche, by Evan Linder and Andrew Hobgood, directed by Jarrad West. At ACT Hub, Kingston, until August 1. Reviewed by LEN POWER
What do quiches, lesbians and the Cold War have in common?
When the Susan B Anthony Society for the Sisters of Gertrude Stein convenes for its annual quiche breakfast in 1956, the women find that the sudden end of the world gives them the opportunity to be who they really are.
This delightfully absurd comedy is satirical, poking fun at Cold War paranoia, the joys of quiche as well as American society and attitudes of the 1950s. You don’t have to think too hard. If there’s a message here it might just as well be lesbians are fun!
Director Jarrad West has cooked up a crazy and highly entertaining show with a cast of five who attack the comedy with all stops out and clearly have a great time doing it.
West’s set design is a beauty with the ACT Hub theatre re-designed as a very colourful American community meeting place complete with patriotic bunting. Fiona Leech has excelled herself with striking 1950s costumes for the five women.
The ensemble cast of Crystal Mahon, Steph Roberts, Sian Harrington, Ylaria Rogers and Meaghan Stewart all give hilarious performances with their clearly defined characterisations. It’s all skilfully played at a breathless pace with excellent comic timing.
The audience is involved in the fun as members of the society attending the meeting. You have the opportunity to declare your real self along with the other members as the meeting proceeds.
Everyman Theatre’s Jarrad West and his cast will ensure you never look at quiche the same way again!
