Two men who were already subject to bail conditions have been charged after police chased a stolen four-wheel drive through several Canberra suburbs before it crashed through locked gates at a Lawson construction site overnight.
Police allege the white Ford Everest was stolen from a Bungendore home on Wednesday after its owner briefly left the vehicle running in the driveway to defrost the windows.
About 11.20pm on Friday, ACT Ambulance officers driving under lights and sirens on Gungahlin Drive noticed the Ford Everest following the ambulance through red lights, using bike lanes and the road shoulder. Police allege the vehicle also tailgated the ambulance.
A short time later, police found the Everest in Braddon, but it drove away. Police allege it was then driven dangerously through North Canberra, Gungahlin and Belconnen.
During the pursuit, the Ford Everest struck a police vehicle on Maribyrnong Avenue in Kaleen before continuing into Lawson, where police allege it crashed through multiple locked gates at a construction site.
The vehicle eventually stopped on Ginninderra Drive near Aikman Drive and three people ran from the scene.
Police arrested two men, aged 19 and 30, a short time later. Both have been charged with breaching bail and riding in a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent.
Police are continuing to investigate the identity of the third person.
Anyone who saw the white Ford Everest being driven or has dashcam footage from Friday night is urged to contact police via the Crime Stoppers ACT website.
