The ACT Government will spend $2.7 million in the 2026-27 Budget to begin implementing a 10-year plan aimed at improving water quality in Lake Tuggeranong and reducing blue-green algal blooms.
The funding will pay for additional street sweeping, community education, research and monitoring, and trials of anti-algal technologies.
The Healthy Waterways Plan identifies phosphorus carried into the lake through urban stormwater as the main cause of recurring algal blooms.
Conservation Council ACT Region welcomed the funding, saying investment in reducing nutrient pollution would benefit both Lake Tuggeranong and the wider Murrumbidgee catchment.
Executive director Simon Copland said residents had endured toxic algal blooms for years and supported greater investment in practical measures to improve water quality.
The ACT Government says the new funding builds on more than $40 million spent on the Tuggeranong catchment through the Healthy Waterways Program since 2014.
