Canberra’s young pianists have emerged as standout performers at the Australian National Eisteddfod Piano competition, with local musicians claiming both of the championship titles in a week that showcased some of Australia’s most promising keyboard talent.
Held at the Wesley Music Centre from August 15 to 20, the piano section attracted 130 performers from Canberra, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide, ranging in age from seven years and under to open competitors. More than 370 performances were presented during the six day event.
A major highlight was the Open Piano Championship, where seven finalists impressed Melbourne pianist and adjudicator Konstantin Shamray with performances of exceptional quality.
The championship was eventually won by Sydney pianist Massimo Russo, whose program included Chopin’s Nocturne in B Major, Op. 62 No. 1 and Carl Vine’s Piano Sonata No. 4.
This year also saw the introduction of two new championship categories designed to give young pianists the opportunity to present short recital programs. The competitions attracted talented musicians from across the country, including students from the Sydney Conservatorium’s Rising Stars program.

The good news for Canberra was that both new titles went to local performers. James Neeman won the Junior Piano Championship for pianists aged 13 years and under, while Ryan Xing took out the Senior Piano Championship for competitors aged 18 years and under.
Organisers said it was particularly pleasing to see Canberra so strongly represented against such high calibre national competition.
The championships were made possible through the support of major sponsor Dianne Anderson, whose contribution provided prizes valued at more than $13,000. The Eisteddfod also acknowledged the work of its volunteers, whose efforts helped ensure the smooth running of the event.
Joining Shamray on the adjudication panel was Australian pianist Kristian Chong.
The Australian National Eisteddfod continues through September with its Singing, and Speech and Drama competitions.
