Canberra’s annual mowing season has been extended to mid-May, as the government responds to rapid grass growth driven by an unusually warm and wet autumn.
The program, which typically runs from September to March, will continue for several more weeks as crews work to manage what officials say is a significant increase in workload across public spaces.
Sue Marriage, of City Presentation, said recent weather conditions had led to widespread and dense growth.
“The late rainfall and warmer-than-usual autumn conditions have led to significant grass growth across the ACT,” she said.
“Our crews are working hard to get on top of areas that have been difficult to access during periods of wet weather, and we’re extending the season to make sure this work can continue.”
The government says some areas may not be cut to the usual standard, with thick growth requiring multiple passes and slowing progress.
Priority is being given to safety-critical locations, including roadsides, intersections and high-use public areas.
“To get through the backlog as quickly as possible, some areas may not receive the same finish people are used to, but this approach ensures we’re addressing safety first,” Ms Marriage said.
The extended program will also be delivered in phases rather than suburb-by-suburb, allowing crews to respond more flexibly to conditions.
Fuel supply issues are also affecting some contractors’ ability to take on additional work, adding further pressure to the program.
Residents are being urged to report urgent safety concerns via Fix My Street, and can check mowing schedules through the City Services website.
