Over the coming months, CityNews will speak with Handyman’s Trading Post owner and manager JOHN RIVERS about renovation ideas, building trends and practical solutions for Canberra homeowners. In his first sponsored column, John discusses one of the most common questions he’s asked: what sort of door should I choose?
ANSWER: Handyman’s Trading Post owner John Rivers says the answer depends on far more than appearance alone.
“We often have customers come in knowing they want a glass door, but they’re not always sure which style will work best for the way they intend to use the space,” says John.
Having supplied new, factory-second and second-hand doors and windows to Canberra renovators for more than 40 years, Handyman’s Trading Post has seen trends come and go.
“We’ve helped thousands of homeowners complete renovation projects over the years, and every space has different requirements,” John says.
While aesthetics are important, John says practicality should be the starting point.
“The first thing I ask people is how they’re going to use the space,” he says.
“If you’re often moving bulky items like bikes or sports equipment, carrying platters outside for entertaining or expecting lots of foot traffic, you should think about maximising the opening size.”

John says French doors, bi-fold doors and stacker doors are popular choices for homeowners wanting wider access.
“It’s easy to forget standard sliding doors only ever open to around half their width,” he says.
“Stacker doors are different because the panels stack in front of each other, creating a much larger opening.”
Natural light is another major consideration.
“If maximising light is your goal, taller doors can make a huge difference,” says John.
“A three-panel sliding door that opens in the middle can be a very cost-effective way to bring in more light without increasing the size of the opening.”

Glazing also plays a role in comfort and energy efficiency.
“We stock a large range of new and second-hand double glazed doors that offer excellent value,” John says.
“But it’s important to consider the whole space. If the walls and roof aren’t insulated, the additional investment in double glazing may not always deliver the benefits you’re expecting.”
Ventilation is another factor that can easily be overlooked.
“If you want to leave the doors open for airflow, you’ll probably need to think about flyscreens or security screens as well,” he says.
“We have an extensive range of screen and security doors, and it’s generally easier to source screens for standard-height sliding doors than some of the larger custom options.”
With new stock arriving regularly, John says the best approach is often to speak directly with the team.
“We’re constantly getting new doors and windows through the yard, so what’s available changes all the time,” he says.
“The best thing to do is come in and have a chat with us about your project.”
“And if we don’t have exactly what you’re looking for, we’ll happily take your details and keep an eye out for you as a complimentary service.”
“We’re looking forward to helping more Canberra homeowners find the right solution for their renovation projects.
“There’s no substitute for seeing the products in person and talking through the options with someone who understands what will work best for your space.”
