Whan wins Monaro on preferences

DESPITE winning the first-preference vote count, sitting Nationals member Nichole Overall has been defeated on preferences by Labor’s Steve Whan in the state seat of Monaro.

Labor’s Steve Whan.

Whan, a former two-time member for Monaro and a NSW minister, dominated the two-party preferred vote as the initial count, apart from postal votes, for Monaro in Saturday’s general election was completed on Wednesday.

Overall secured 17,793 first preferences to Whan’s 17,501. But the distribution of preferences gave Whan 52.37 per cent of the vote to Overall’s 47.63 per cent.
