GOVERNOR-General David Hurley will plant a Magnolia Elizabeth tree at St John’s Church as a memorial to the late Queen.

On April 14, the church in Reid will take part in the Australia-wide tree plantings to honour 70 years of service of the Queen.

The Queen’s ties to St John’s reach back to her first Australian visit – just after her coronation – in February, 1954.

She returned to the church on three other occasions, her last visit was October 23, 2011.

A plaque and information display board will be placed near the tree describing the Queen’s long association with St John’s, in addition to two benches.

Rev David McLennan said the late Queen was a devoted Christian whose faith was well known.

“I hope many people will respond to outstanding invitation to visit the historic grounds of St John’s to see this tree planted in her honour, and to spend a moment reflecting on her long life of service,” he said.

The dedication will begin at 3.30pm near the east lychgate, off Anzac Park West, behind the Boer War memorial.
