A 53-year-old Evatt man driving “erratically”, has been caught drink driving twice in two hours.

At 10.50pm on Thursday, police saw a black Toyota Landcruiser speeding and swerving along Owen Dixon Drive.

Officers conducted a traffic stop and conducted a breath test, which returned a positive result. The man was taken to Belconnen Police Station, where he returned a breath analysis of 0.213, more than four times the legal limit.

The man was issued an immediate suspension notice, suspending his right to drive for 90 days.

AT 12.20am on Friday, officers from Operation Toric were patrolling along Owen Dixon Drive when they saw the same black Toyota Landcruiser leaving a car park, driving erratically and swerving on to the wrong side of the road.

A check of police information revealed the driver to be the same man who had been suspended less than two hours earlier.

Police attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the vehicle failed to stop and drove away at excessive speed.

Officers then attended a house in Evatt, where the man provided a positive screening for alcohol. He was taken to the City Police Station, where he returned a breath analysis of 0.168, more than three times the legal limit.

The man has been charged with two counts of driving a motor vehicle with alcohol in his blood, and single counts of failing to stop for police and driving while suspended.

Double demerits are currently in force in the ACT and NSW, and will remain until 11.59pm on April 25.
