Operational areas at the Winchester Police Centre were again flooded during heavy rain over the weekend, disrupting policing facilities and prompting fresh criticism of the ACT Government’s management of police infrastructure.
The latest water ingress follows a series of infrastructure failures affecting ACT police buildings in recent years.
In November, the ACT Police Watch House was forced to close due to flooding and faecal contamination, with detainees transferred to Tuggeranong while the facility was cleaned.
Canberra Liberals MLA Deborah Morris said officers had repeatedly been forced to work in unacceptable conditions because of deteriorating facilities.
She said police buildings had experienced flooding, sewage leaks, gas hazards, lead contamination, damaged equipment and collapsing ceiling panels.
“When policing facilities fail, it undermines community safety,” Ms Morris said.
Ms Morris said the government risked breaching its work health and safety obligations if staff continued working in buildings she described as unsafe and not fit for purpose.
She called on the ACT Government to prioritise investment in “safe, modern and fit-for-purpose” policing facilities across the territory.
