Major road duplications to begin this year

Upgrades were being delivered in partnership with the Australian Government and include duplications of Athllon Drive in Tuggeranong and William Hovell Drive in Canberra’s west.

Construction on two major road duplication projects in Canberra is expected to begin this year, as the ACT Government pushes ahead with major infrastructure upgrades.

City and Government Services Minister Tara Cheyne said the upgrades were being delivered in partnership with the Australian Government and include duplications of Athllon Drive in Tuggeranong and William Hovell Drive in Canberra’s west.

She said the government’s road investment program also includes resurfacing and maintenance works across the city.

The development application for the duplication of Athllon Drive had now been approved. The project would duplicate 2.4 kilometres of the southern section between Sulwood Drive and Drakeford Drive, a key corridor connecting Woden and Tuggeranong.

Enabling works have already been completed, including upgrades to the C4 community path, new footpath connections and utility works. A tender for the main construction contract was expected to be issued in the coming months, with construction anticipated to begin later this year.

The minister said construction was also expected to begin soon on the duplication of William Hovell Drive. The project would duplicate 4.5 kilometres of road between Drake-Brockman Drive and John Gorton Drive, with the aim of improving safety and reducing congestion in Canberra’s western suburbs.

The works were part of a broader period of infrastructure investment across the territory, including upgrades to the Monaro Highway.

As part of that project, the new southbound flyover at Lanyon Drive was scheduled to be completed by the end of 2026. The eastern side of the new Dog Trap Creek Bridge had already been finished, with further work continuing on a new flyover and interchange in Hume.

Alongside the major upgrades, the government’s annual resurfacing program was also continuing across Canberra, with more than one million square metres of road scheduled to be resurfaced this season.

Recent works had been completed on the northbound lanes of the Tuggeranong Parkway at Weston Creek and along the Barton Highwayat Crace.

Weather permitting, the next stage of resurfacing works was expected to begin this month on Canberra Avenue in Fyshwick toward the Queanbeyan border, with lane closures and reduced speed limits in place while crews work.
