Knife alleged in failed carjacking in Melba

A 24-year-old Latham man – who was subject to bail and a good behaviour order – has been charged with multiple offences following an alleged attempted carjacking in Melba.

About 2.15 on Monday afternoon, police were called to Kingsford Smith Drive after reports a man was brandishing a large knife.

After a short chase, the man dropped the knife he was carrying and was arrested.

Officers subsequently spoke with several witnesses who alleged the man had earlier attempted to steal a vehicle by threatening a driver at knifepoint. Police allege the attempt was unsuccessful because the man was unable to start the vehicle.

The man has been charged with breaching bail, breaching a good behaviour order, possession of stolen property, possession of an offensive weapon with intent, attempted aggravated robbery, property damage and intentional threat to inflict grievous bodily harm.

Anyone who witnessed the incident should contact police on 1800 333000 or via the Crime Stoppers ACT website.
