The ACT has reached a major milestone in the transition to battery electric vehicles (EVs), with more than 10,000 EVs registered in the ACT as of this week, says the ACT branch of the Australian Electric Vehicle Association (AEVA).

In less than five years, EV numbers in Canberra have grown from around 400 to 10,000. About three per cent of all registered vehicles are EVs.

“Electric vehicles are now firmly part of the Canberra landscape,” says Paul Wayper, ACT branch advocacy lead.

“Whereas once you could count the number of EVs encountered on a trip, with about one in every 30 cars now being EVs, you can count them at the traffic lights.”

He says new EV registrations in 2024 are growing about eight per cent faster than in 2023.
