Tempo takes to a telephone thriller

Dial ‘M’ For Murder… Belconnen Community Theatre, May 29-June 6.

Here’s the latest Arts in the City column from HELEN MUSA.

Tempo Theatre has forsaken Agatha Christie this year for Frederick Knott’s thriller Dial ‘M’ For Murder, made famous in a movie by Alfred Hitchcock. The story follows the scheming Tony, whose greed and desire for revenge drive him to plot the murder of his wealthy wife Margot, using the phone as an instrument of death. Belconnen Community Theatre, May 29-June 6.

After more than 40 years living and working side by side, painter Kerry McInnis and sculptor Mike MacGregor are joining forces in an exhibition, Of Ravens and Rivers, that reflects their shared fascination with landscape, wildlife and waterways. Pivot Gallery, Belconnen Arts Centre, May 22-July 5.

Governor-General Sam Mostyn, the patron of Artsound radio, recently visited the station, where she opened Studio 1, recorded a half hour interview with Bart Meehan about her childhood in Canberra, spoke to a group of volunteers and took a selfie. 

The National Film and Sound Archive will mark Reconciliation Week with two Australian film screenings accompanied by filmmaker Q&As. One Mind, One Heart explores the rediscovery of the 1963 Yirrkala Bark Petitions, and in High Ground, a former soldier and a young Aboriginal man forge an uneasy alliance while tracking a warrior accused of attacking settlers. At the Arc Cinema, May 28 and May 31.

Lano & Woodley in Space… Canberra Theatre, May 30.

Madcap comedy duo Lano & Woodley are bringing their latest intergalactic adventure to Canberra for two performances. Since reuniting in 2016, the pair have been treating audiences to tributes to the Wright Brothers and Herman Melville’s Moby Dick. This time it’s Lano & Woodley in Space. Canberra Theatre, May 30.

Guaranteed to send a shiver up many a spine, Maria Fernanda Cardoso’s Spiders of Paradise presents new works from Cardoso’s Spiders of Paradise photographic series alongside her video work On the Origins of Art I-II. The exhibition also shows large-scale photographs of Australian peacock spiders. Canberra Museum and Gallery, May 30-August 23.

Aarwun Gallery’s annual art auction promises a showcase of works from Australian artists, spanning painting, sculpture and mixed media. Aarwun Gallery, Gold Creek, Canberra, May 24.
