Man charged after assault and stolen car chase

A 23-year-old Duffy man, who was subject to good behaviour obligations, has been charged after police allege he stole a car in Hawker, injured its owner and led police on a pursuit across Canberra.

Police allege the man stole a white Volkswagen Golf from the Hawker Shops about 6.45pm on Friday.

The vehicle’s owner confronted two people inside the Golf before it was driven away. The owner suffered leg, hands and head, injuries and lost consciousness. They were treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to hospital.

At about 7.35pm, the stolen Golf was spotted by police on William Hovell Drive in Belconnen, but the driver failed to stop, accelerated away and a pursuit began.

Police allege the Golf was driven at excessive speed through several Canberra suburbs, committing multiple traffic offences and placing other road users at risk.

A tyre deflation device was deployed on Hindmarsh Drive before the Golf came to a stop in Garran.

The man and a female passenger were arrested at the scene.

Police allege the man returned a positive breath test and checks also showed he had never held a driver’s licence.

He has been charged with driving a motor vehicle without consent, failing to stop for police, aggravated dangerous driving, drink driving and unlicensed driving.

The woman was released without charge.
