Drink-driver nearly four times over limit in rural road blitz

A driver allegedly almost four times over the legal alcohol limit was among motorists caught during a police road safety operation in the Uriarra and Tharwa areas.

Police issued 24 traffic infringement notices during the operation, including one to a driver caught travelling at 105km/h in a 60km/h zone.

Four vehicles were defected and 38 roadside drug tests were conducted, all returning negative results.

One driver allegedly returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.189, almost four times the legal limit.

The operation targeted motorcycle riders and other motorists using popular rural roads on the western side of Canberra.

Insp Mark Steel said: “Motorcyclists are among our most vulnerable road users, particularly on rural roads where conditions can change quickly.

“Speeding, impaired driving and unsafe vehicles put everyone at risk, and can have devastating consequences when crashes occur.

“We want all riders and drivers to get home safely, so slow down, ride to the conditions and make safe choices every time you get behind the wheel or on a motorcycle.”
