Visa scam: police charge western Sydney man

A 51-year-old western Sydney man has been extradited and charged after allegedly defrauding more than $42,000 from a woman who was living in Australia on a student visa.

In January 2021 the man met the 34-year-old woman and, police will allege, told her he could help her obtain an Australian visa.

From January to September 2021 the woman made 29 deposits to him totalling more than $42,000.

In December 2021 she reported the incident at the Civic police station.

In June 2024 detectives searched the man’s residence in Middleton Grange.

He was issued a summons in November, but had failed to appear before court.

On Thursday he was extradited to the ACT and charged with 29 counts of obtaining property by deception.
