Reimagining of local music – with lights!

Spectrum Big Band.

Lots of stuff happening on stages all across Canberra this coming week. Arts editor HELEN MUSA has the details in her Artsweek column. 

CANcophony is a reimagining of local contemporary music backed by Spectrum Big Band and Strings, Bec Taylor and The Lyrebirds, The Burley Griffins, Citizen Kaye, Gia Ransome, Lucy Sugerman, Peach Lane, Ruth O’Brien and Sesame Girl. It will feature a light show designed for the music. UC Refectory, Bruce, March 9.

The BOLD Festival is a dance summit at thevNational Film and Sound Archive, (A BOLD Vision) the National Portrait Gallery, Canberra Museum and Gallery, Gorman House and QL2 Dance, March 8-10. Full program here theboldfestival.com.au

Aarwun Gallery has Millie Black’s Dawn & Dusk, Malcolm Pettigrove’s Introduction to the Vitruvian Tree, Andrew Grassi Kelaher’s Tactile Textured Terrain and Simone Piccioni’s Now and All, all opening at Shop 11, Federation Square, Nicholls, March 9.

Film

  • The 2024 Palestinian Film Festival Australia is at Dendy Cinemas, March 8 -10.

Stage

  • The Q The Locals season begins with Happy Meals, Happy Kids, written and directed by Jade Breen, this new work sees a group of friends gather in the crumbling remains of a fast-food restaurant desperate to finish their school project. The Q, March 7-9.
  • Puccini’s famous short opera Sister Angelica (Suor Angelica) is presented by National Opera to mark Puccini’s 100th birthday. Albert Hall, March 7 and 10.
  • The Threshold by Judith Clingan combines music, theatre, dance and visual art to explore the taboo surrounding ageing and the end of life for women in the Western world, Australian Centre for Christianity and Culture, March 8.
  • The introductory Acting For the Fun of It course on acting techniques starts on March 25. Details from tutor Peter Wilkins at 0408 034373.

  • CSO chamber concert, Tuggeranong Arts Centre, March 7.
  • The 60th anniversary tour of The Animals, is at The Playhouse, March 8.
  • Wesley Music Centre Lunchtime concert series presents Baroque and Galant style music. March 8.
  • Curtis Eller is a banjo player, songwriter and rock ‘n’ roll singer whose solo shows once earned him the title of “New York’s angriest yodelling banjo player”. He’ll be in double bill with Gleny Rae Virus at Smith’s Alternative, March 8.
  • Manus McGuire and Adam Ogle will be kicking off festivities for St Patrick’s Day at the Canberra Irish Club, March 9.
  • Caravãna Sun with Benji and the Saltwater Sound System and Felicity Dowd, Sound Shell outdoor amphitheatre, Four Winds, Barragga Bay, March 9.
  • The Hoodoo Gurus will join the Canberra Symphony Orchestra for Symphony in the Park, March 10.
