Maude, the sulphur-crested cockatoo from Coolac, has deliberated on entries for the 28th Bald Archy Prize and declared Newcastle artist Judy Nadin the 2024 winner for her work, Flippin’ Kerfection, a depiction of Aussie soccer player Sam Kerr’s celebratory backflip.

Nadin, a long-time entrant in the satirical portraiture competition created in 1994 by the late Peter Batey said: “I’m over the moon to have won the 2024 Bald Archy Prize and thrilled the Museum of the Riverina has kept Peter Batey’s legacy alive.”

After Batey’s death in 2019, the administration of the prize went to the Museum of the Riverina in Wagga Wagga, which revived the tour in 2023. Museum manager Luke Grealy, who praised judge Maude for “another wise choice”, said the show was a highlight for their own exhibition schedule, but that it also drew strong audience numbers for the venues it visits during its annual tour, which always begins in Canberra, the natural home, Batey believed, for satire.

Nadin, who also also won  in 2010 and 2014, said she had painted the Matildas’ captain Sam Kerr, “because the entire country was doing backflips after that quarter final match”.

The 2024 Bald Archy Prize is still on display at Watson Arts Centre until March 17.
