New glass  ‘pairs’ husband and wife skills

HELEN MUSA presents another week in the world of arts in her latest “Artsweek” column.

QUEANBEYAN glass artists and local husband-and-wife arts identities Matthew Curtis and Harriet Schwarzrock will open “Paired”, an exhibition of new works, at Suki & Hugh Gallery, Bungendore, on September 9. Curtis works with the traditional glassblowing technique known as “sommerso”, while Schwarzrock has been experimenting in manipulating borosilicate glass tubing usually associated with laboratory apparatus. Until October 15.

THE National Film and Sound Archive is screening the Australian comedy crime film “Two Hands”, Arc Cinema, September 8 and “The X-Files” 30th anniversary celebration on September 9.

AIATSIS and the Embassy of Guatemala present “Celebrating First Nations Partnerships – Guatemalan Exhibition” featuring a range of artworks and artefacts reflecting the heritage of the Mayan people of Guatemala. At AIATSIS/Maraga, until September 30.

Exhibitions

  • Celebrating 30 years of the Canberra-Nara Sister City relationship is “End Point of the Silk Road” by Noriko Tanaka.  Belco Arts until October 8.
  • “The Overwintering Project: Jerrabomberra Wetlands” is part of an ongoing portfolio led by printmaker Kate Gorringe-Smith in which artists from around Australia and NZ are asked to consider the plight of migratory shorebirds and respond to their habitat through print. Megalo Print, Kingston, September 9-October 28.

Stage

  • “Mr Bennet’s Bride”, a “Pride and Prejudice” prequel, is at Canberra Rep Theatre, September 7-23.
  • Hearstrings Theatre brings a new musical, “The Hello Girls,” to The Playhouse, September 7-9.
  • In “Larry’s Cabaret Beret”, Larry Olive from Sydney stages joins Anita Douche, Nigel Hornberry, Mikelangelo and Shortis and Simpson for a night of cabaret at Smith’s Alternative, Civic, September 8.
  • Comedian Jimmy Rees will perform his “Not That Kinda Viral” show at Canberra. Royal Theatre, September 9.

Concerts

  • “Songs for Freedom”, a concert written and performed after a 12-year project in the community of Roebourne in WA, is at Llewellyn Hall, September 9.
  • Cellist David Pereira will play Popper’s “Hungarian Rhapsody” with Musica da Camera then direct the orchestra in a program of works for string orchestra with music for young and old, including Pereira’s own variations on “Incy Wincy Spider” and some classical music from “Bluey”. Holy Covenant Church, Cook, September 9 and Soldier’s Memorial Hall, Gundaroo, September 10.
  • A four-hands piano concert by Aaron Chew and Jennifer Hou will feature works by Mozart, Schubert, Brahms and Debussy. Wesley Music Centre, September 10.
