Repair Café keeps hundreds of items out of landfill

Hawker Men’s Shed’s Community Repair Café… named a finalist in two categories of the 2026 Australian Men’s Shed Association National Awards.

The Hawker Men’s Shed says its Community Repair Café has achieved an 88 per cent repair success rate, helping save more than 1850 items from landfill since the initiative began in October 2020.

The volunteer-run program gives Canberrans the chance to bring in broken household items for free repair advice and assistance, with everything from small electrical appliances and furniture to clothing, jewellery, bikes and garden tools being restored rather than discarded.

The repair effort has become one of the centrepieces of the Hawker Men’s Shed’s community work, with the organisation recently named a finalist in two categories of the 2026 Australian Men’s Shed Association National Awards.

The next Hawker Community Repair Café will be held from 10am to 1pm on Sunday, June, 21 at the Hawker International Softball Centre.

Alongside the repair café, visitors can browse more than 30 Made Local Market stalls featuring handmade crafts, artworks, plants, jewellery, artisan foods and a range of products created from recycled and reused materials.

A gold coin donation is requested for entry.
