The ACT Government says it will spend $1.34 billion over the next seven years on a new northside hospital, bringing its total commitment to the project to almost $1.5 billion over a decade.

Funding in the 2026-27 Budget will support construction of a new seven-storey clinical services building at the North Canberra Hospital campus, marking the first stage of a broader redevelopment.

The facility will include more than 300 treatment spaces, a new emergency department, a 14-bed intensive care unit, maternity services, operating theatres, endoscopy suites and more than 200 inpatient beds.

The project will also include upgrades to Haydon Drive intersections, more than 700 additional car parks and a new 100-place childcare centre.

The redevelopment is intended to replace ageing hospital infrastructure dating back to 1979 while allowing the existing hospital to remain operational during construction.

The ACT Government says planning and early design work has been completed, with early works already underway and main construction expected to begin in 2027-28.
