Cult drama Unchosen delivers the promised thrills

Rosie (Molly Windsor) believes she is one of the few that have been selected for salvation in Unchosen.

Unchosen can feel like it wants to get more caught up in soapy drama rather than exploring the psychology of its characters on a deeper level. Despite that, it still delivers the thrills it promises, writes Streaming columnist NICK OVERALL.

Tapping into a huge modern fascination with cults, Unchosen has just launched on Netflix with an instant following of its own.

This British psychological drama series is set inside a cult called The Fellowship of the Divine.

Rosie (Molly Windsor) knows no life outside the teachings of the secretive group, having grown up believing she is one of the few that have been selected for salvation.

Her world view is thrown into turmoil when a mysterious stranger named Sam (Fra Free) saves her daughter during a medical emergency.

Immediately drawn to him, Sam opens up something of a Pandora’s Box, sending Rosie down a new path that has her questioning everything she’s ever known.

It’s a great premise and the series is easy to get caught up in.

Unchosen can feel like it wants to get more caught up in soapy drama rather than exploring the psychology of its characters on a deeper level.

It’s a shame that at times it can hold back a good show from becoming a great show with some truly fascinating subject matter.

Despite that, the show still delivers the thrills it promises, ultimately making Unchosen a very decent choice.

Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) and Claire Randall (Caitriona Balfe) in Outlander… the final series is on Binge.

JUST wrapping up its eighth and final season on Binge, Outlander will go down as one of the decade’s most underrated shows.

The story follows Claire Randall (Caitriona Balfe) a World War II nurse who is transported back in time to the Scottish Highlands in 1743.

There she encounters Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan), a warrior and clan member caught up in the conflict leading to the Jacobite Uprising.

Claire’s knowledge of how history unfolds comes into conflict with Fraser’s loyalty to his clan.

Don’t let the time-travel element give the wrong impression.

In big picture history, Outlander can be pretty accurate in its depictions of the setting and time period.

The extra sci-fi element brings a unique angle to the history here.

With more than 100 episodes that have been released since 2014, Outlander has remained fresh and stuck its landing.

Perhaps, with time, this history drama will earn its own place in TV history.

THRILL seekers have much to find on HBO Max this month with The Dark Wizard, a documentary exploring the life and psyche of one of the world’s most extreme and controversial rock climbers.

Dean Potter earned notoriety for his increasingly dangerous conquests that put his fans more and more on the edge of their seats.

Climbing huge cliffs without ropes, base jumping from death-defying heights, walking tightropes across deep crevasses.

What leads a person to want to do something so extreme, not just once but again and again?

The Dark Wizard wants to answer that question with its four episodes now streaming.

For those who don’t know anything else about Potter and his story, try to go in without researching him beforehand. The experience will be better and more shocking.

THE latest globe-trotting action thriller to hit the streaming world has landed on Binge this month.

It’s called Prisoner and it comes from Matt Chatman (the mind behind Hostage and Bridge of Spies).

Combine that with the directing talent of Otto Bathurst (Peaky Blinders) and there’s a very solid set up here.

The story follows Amber, a young prison officer who gets more than she bargains for when she has to transport a ruthless killer named Tibor to court to testify against his crime syndicate. When the convoy is ambushed though, Amber and Tibor are the only survivors and have to work together in order to make it out alive.

All six episodes of this thriller series were filmed in Wales, offering a different stage for the deadly cat-and-mouse game to be set on.

Packed with action and a great dynamic between its two leading characters, Prisoner is a cut above the stock standard action affair in the streaming world.
