The Canberra Liberals have created two new shadow cabinet portfolios focused on men’s and women’s health, in a move they say will strengthen policy responses across wellbeing, safety and social issues in the ACT.

Opposition Leader Mark Parton announced the changes on Thursday, appointing himself as Shadow Minister for Men and Men’s Health, while Leanne Castley will take on the role of Shadow Minister for Women and Women’s Health.

Mr Parton said the new portfolios were designed to better address the different challenges faced by men and women.

“These portfolios recognise that while many issues are shared, men and women often experience different pathways and barriers across health, safety, economic participation and social connection,” he said.

“A dedicated focus will ensure that policy responses are practical, inclusive and outcomes-driven.”

The men’s health portfolio will cover areas including mental health and suicide prevention, education engagement, employment pathways and interaction with the justice system.

The women’s health portfolio will focus on issues such as domestic and family violence, access to healthcare including reproductive services, workforce participation and leadership opportunities.

Ms Castley said improving safety and wellbeing for women and girls would be central to the role.

“Every woman and every girl deserves to feel safe in their home, at work, and in their community,” she said.

Mr Parton will retain the broader health portfolio, with the new roles intended to sit alongside his existing responsibilities.

The opposition said the changes were aimed at delivering more targeted policy development and improving social cohesion across the ACT.
