Canberrans are being warned of an increased risk of thunderstorm asthma on Sunday, with high pollen levels, strong winds and forecast storms creating potentially dangerous conditions.
The ACT Chief Health Officer has issued a public health alert for Canberra and the surrounding region, warning that people with asthma or hay fever could be particularly vulnerable.
People who have experienced asthma in the past, suffer asthma symptoms during spring or are sensitive to grass pollen are also at greater risk.
Those at risk are advised to stay indoors with windows and doors closed, particularly during gusty winds, and turn off air conditioners that draw air from outside, including evaporative coolers.
They should monitor for symptoms, follow their asthma or hay fever action plans and carry prescribed medication when leaving home.
Health authorities say thunderstorm asthma events are rare and the increased risk does not necessarily mean one will occur.
Anyone experiencing a medical emergency should call Triple Zero (000) and remain indoors while waiting for an ambulance.
