Traffic lanes reduced as bridge work gets underway

Commonwealth Avenue traffic… things start changing on Thursday.

Two years of major renewal works on Commonwealth Avenue Bridge will start on Thursday with changed traffic arrangements to support preliminary construction activities.

They include the removal of the two sets of flagpoles and construction of temporary crossover lanes in the medians either end of the bridge.

The National Capital Authority says sections of Commonwealth Avenue and the whole of Commonwealth Avenue Bridge will be reduced to two lanes in both directions for the duration of these works, with additional lane closures in off-peak hours as required.

Lane closures will be implemented gradually with northbound closures in place from Thursday and southbound closures from Tuesday.

The NCA also says there will be a lane closure of Flynn Drive westbound, 7am-6pm, on Thursday and Friday for the delivery of site sheds to the new site compound.

These activities are expected to be completed in mid-December 2025 (weather permitting).

The main bridge construction work will begin in January and be completed by the end of 2027.
